Speaking in terms of a motorcyclist, even the plain can sometimes be pleasantly surprising; it is the case in our itinerary set between the rivers – Oglio and Po.
Beautiful streets behind the main roads, so we plunge in a maze of paths that cross these interesting areas.
We can also follow the “The Street of Wines and Mantuan Flavours”. A brand which is very cool!
The road is also well marked with appropriate signs.
We jump in the saddle!
Sabbioneta, “Gonzaga’s Little Athens ” is our starting point.
The center of Sabbioneta, a must visit place, is enclosed by the ancient city walls, very well preserved in hexagonal structure in the shape of a star, and has two entrances: Porta Vittoria, the oldest one, and Porta Imperiale. We leave this interesting center, with its picturesque streets and the road paved with cobblestones, so we test the suspension of the bike!
We reach Commessaggio, a small village that has retained its medieval design, which welcomes us with its mighty Torrazzo and the distinctive pontoon bridge over the canal Navarolo.
Immersed in nature
In this part of the route, we dive into the nature and the green of Parco dell’Oglio; in the countryside comprised of streets that follow the boundaries of plots, so pleasant to go by bike.
From Bocca Chiavica the road passes near the river Oglio in some parts, hence the advice is to travel with the classic “little gas”, to admire the typical natural environments as wetlands, floodplains, riparian forests. Here it is not unusual, in season, watching herons and egrets. At the junction for San Matteo, turn towards Mantua, to discover another striking pontoon bridge to cross on moto.
We leave the river Oglio to reach the big river: Po. We arrive in San Matteo, with its thermal power plant, which is an outstanding example of industrial architecture of the early twentieth century, and then we reach Dosolo soon after Pomponesco.
From water to wine. We cross the charming and peaceful countryside coming around Viadana, where the vineyards begin to be present more and more. Here we also find other typical products of this area such as the spectacular Viadana melon and sweet pumpkin.
This is still the fabled land of Lambrusco Mantovano wine and breathtaking Mantuan cuisine, such as the famous tortelli of pumpkin … how about a break?
