By bike to the peak of Austria: the Grossglockner and the Hochalpenstrasse

Never mind the jacket patches, never mind the little flags on the map and never mind the postcards and souvenir snapshots, all that matters is just what has been an icon for generations of European bikers: the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse.

Since this legendary high mountain road was first opened way back in 1935, more than 50 million people have travelled along it to enjoy the incredible views from the 3,798 metre-high summit of Austria’s highest peak.

This most famous alpine road in all of Europe, open from the beginning of May to the end of October, snakes its way from Heiligenblut am Großglockner in the Carinthia Region, through the heart of the High Tauern National Park, all the way to Fusch in the Salzburg Region.
